The Seated Dollar was a Silver dollar U.S. coin introduced in 1840, in very large quantities, and was in general circulation until 1853.
After 1853, it was used mainly as a trade coin for the Orient, because the price of silver was worth more than the coin.
It was placed back in regular circulation after 1870, when the price of silver went down and was issued up until 1873.
The Seated Liberty Dollar depicts Lady Liberty seated holding the Union Shield, and a Bald Eagle holding arrows and an olive branch with the Union Shield on its chest. It was designed by Christian Gobrecht and matched the current half dime, twenty-cent piece, quarter, and half dollar he also designed.
The Motto, "In God We Trust" was added in 1866 and ran until 1873.
The 3 most significant dates in these series are; the 1866 with No Motto, the 1870S, and the 1873S.
