Gold Dollar

Also Called the Sacajawea Gold Dollar

Gold Dollar

The Gold Dollar coin, which was authorized by the U.S. $1 coin Act of 1997, replaced the Susan B. Anthony Dollar coin which circulated since 1979.

The Gold Dollar is also called the Sacajawea gold dollar, and was released in 2000. Sacajawea translates to "Bird woman.
It depicts a profile of Sacajawea carrying her infant on her back and a soaring American Bald Eagle encircled by 17 stars on the other side.

Sacajawea was the Shoshone indian who assisted the historic Lewis and Clark expedition (six months pregnant and only 15 at the time),
who helped Lewis and Clark with her diplomatic, navigational, and translating skills. It is said that they surely would have perished without her help.
The 17 stars on the other side of the coin symbolize each state of the union at the time of the 1804 expedition.

This 2000 Gold Dollar Coin helps signify how instrumental and important her role was to the success of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
