The Carson City Morgan Dollars were minted only from 1878 through 1885, and then from 1889 through 1893,
a much shorter period than the rest of the Morgan dollars. Only about 2% of the Morgans struck came from Carson City, which makes them very rare.
The rest of the Morgan's were minted in Denver, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
Jesse James's loot often contained sacks of Morgan Silver Dollars. They were often called them “Cartwheels” because they were the largest U.S. coins ever minted for circulation. They were from Comstock Lode, where much of America's silver was discovered.
Carson City Mint had been closed for almost a century, when sacks and hoards of forgotten uncirculated Carson City Morgan Silver dollars were found in a Treasury Departmentt vault in 1971.
