The 10 Dollar Gold Eagle is also known as the Coronet or Liberty Type, and was minted from 1838 until 1907, and designed by Christian Gobrecht.
The original ten dollar gold eagle featured Miss Liberty on one side with the word Liberty on the Coronet and the spread winged eagle on the other side.
The Motto, "in God We Trust" was added in 1866 and minted until 1907.
There are many rare dates in this Gold Eagle series of coins, with some original mintages of under 10,000 ans some even under 5,000.
The most rare of the series are the 1858, 1860 S, 1864 S, 1870 CC, 1875, 1879 CC, and 1883 O.
The eagle and the dollar were the basis of the U.S. Currency system until the early 1970's.
Afterwards, the Half-Eagle Dollar, Double-Eagle, and Quarter-Eagle were based upon this 10 Dollar Gold Eagle design.
The Modern $50 one ounce bullion is also called an eagle, so do not confuse them.
